Jam Roly Poly Recipe

The recipe is something that always reminds me of my childhood.  A special treat on a winters night with family.  My Mum would make either a jam one like this or adjust it and add apple instead.  I loved having it with ice cream melting around it or with warm custard.  Now that winter is upon us in the Southern Hemisphere what better time to whip up a treat for the family to warm their tummy’s and hearts.


125g butter, softened
2 1/2 – 3 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 cup milk
½ cup jam
¾ cup boiling water
½ cup white sugar
75g butter, melted


Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a baking dish 20 x 30cm or larger.
Rub butter into the flour and baking powder until it looks like fine breadcrumbs.
Add milk gradually and mix until it forms a dough.
If the dough is sticking to your hands gradually add more flour
Place dough on a floured surface and rollout to 1 cm thick.
Make sure it will fit the length of the dish once rolled up.
Spread jam over dough, roll up and place into baking dish.
Mix the water, sugar and butter together before pouring over the roll.
Bake for approx. 45 minutes until golden brown.
Serve warm with custard, cream or ice-cream

  1. Jam roly poly was one of the first dishes I made in Yer 8 Home Economics. It brings back wonderful memories of cold nights, custard, and the smell of sticky sweet jam in the house. Thanks for bringing back those memories. margaret
